Over the weekend it seemed the holiday season began in haste as Americans rushed from our dinner tables to the shopping centers. Black Friday and then Cyber Monday tempted us with the kinds of sales we only find once a year, and we shopped! For those who stayed away from the sales, the weekend may have been spent with family or friends, hanging Christmas lights, making tamales, or watching a game. After all this excitement and time spent enjoying the gifts of the season, it is fitting that today is a day when we turn our attention to others through giving.
Giving Tuesday is a day on which we are encouraged to help others through giving of monetary gifts or through volunteering our time. Celebrated across the United States and beyond, this annual day of giving back is now in its sixth year.
For my family, this day of action centered on helping others is a welcome break in the holiday rush, and a reminder that the gifts we give this season can make a real impact in the world and in the lives of others if we choose to make philanthropy a tradition as well. I truly hope that this day of giving back resonates with you as much as it does with my family and me.
Over the years, I have enjoyed volunteering with my church to serve meals at Haven for Hope homeless shelter, as well as donating to causes that are near and dear to my heart. Today, I encourage you to find a charity whose work is near to your heart, and make a contribution. Many nonprofit organizations that do the good work of protecting our democracy and rights nationally, as well as those that work abroad to make life better for others, will receive matching donations today for every dollar that you give. If you don’t have the money to make a donation, consider giving of your time. Both are needed by all.
If you are not sure where you would you would like to volunteer or donate money then visit the Giving Tuesday official site, www.givingtuesday.org , click on the More tab then on the Participating Organizations link and find a charity that speaks to you.
Happy Giving Tuesday! May we all give as much as we receive.
